Review by Dom Vigil
We Are Scientists’ sixth full-length album, Megaplex is easily their most exciting release to date. Filled with catchy dance-rock hits, guitar-driven bangers and everything in between, Megaplex simply feels fun.
Only ten tracks in length, Megaplex is not only the perfect length, but it also gives We Are Scientists enough time to really explore their songwriting without repeating themselves or sounding stale. Instead, this album finds the band blossoming throughout the ten timeless, dancy tracks. The opener, “One In, One Out” definitely spearheads the album and is sure to get stuck in your head. Driven by groovy bass and electric synth, it contrasts wonderfully with “Notes In A Bottle,” which merges the band’s poppier side with a more guitar-driven sound, which is fully realized on “Your Light Has Changed” a few tracks later.
Each song on Megaplex sounds different, but the album actually flows really well together. Rather than feeling meandering or inconsistent, Megaplex is the perfect snapshot of who We Are Scientists are in 2018, capturing their growth as a band while providing fans with songs that they can dance to. Poppy cuts like “Heart Is A Weapon” stand out alongside the stunning rock ballad, “KIT,” and high points are definitely when the band manages to blend sparkling synth, groovy bass, gritty guitar and spectacular vocal work on songs like “Not Another Word” or the closer, “Properties of Perception.”
Six albums in, and We Are Scientists are still changing the game and challenging their songwriting abilities. Megaplex is the perfect release for both die-hard fans and even those who are only familiar with the band’s previous hit singles. There’s a little something for everyone on this release, making it easy to digest without feeling flat or lazy. Rather, it feels like We Are Scientists are fully embracing every element that makes them who they are, exploring different sounds and influences throughout all ten tracks of Megaplex.
