Interview by Dom Vigil
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself for any readers who may not be familiar?
Sure. I’m a folk singer and musician from Minnesota. I’ve rambled my fair share and have been lucky enough to call a lot of great cities home. My music is inspired by travelin’ adventures, as well as my desire to make the world a more beautiful place through music.
What first inspired you to start writing music? What drew you to life on the road?
I was influenced early on by Bob Dylan, as he was the guy you looked up to if you grew up in Minnesota. Then, when I moved to Texas, it was all about Townes Van Zandt. Life on the road feels natural to me. I can’t really put it into words beyond that. I feel comfortable and at ease when living a life in motion.
How do you feel that you’ve grown since you first started writing and pursuing music to now?
I’ve grown a lot in many areas, mainly just not taking myself too seriously anymore, as I’ve come to see that there are so many talented folks all over the globe doing their thing. I feel blessed to be a part of such a creative community.
Your most recent EP, Uncover The Magic has been out for about six months. Now that you’ve had the chance to travel and play it on the road for a while, what does Uncover The Magic mean to you?
To be honest, I haven’t thought a lot about that EP, as I’ve been writing and recording a new record. I tend to not look back on previous recordings because I’ve got so many songs in front of me. But Uncover The Magic still means to me what I meant with the title — get out there and find the beauty, the magic, in things, people, places. Look for the positive and let amazing things happen to yourself.
You recently released a video for “Keep Working On Love.” Can you tell us a little bit about this track?
We basically wanted to capture the essence of the human spirit, which I think I is really resilient and beautiful. Lots of cameos of 20th century icons and regular, non-famous folks in that vid. We’re all in it together and are equally valid in our contribution to the world. I wrote the song after reading the self-help book from the 70s, Jonathan Livingston Seagull, so that’s where the title and the chorus comes from. We’ve joked around that the song sounds like Bright Eyes just getting out of an ashram or something.
What inspired the music video?
The human spirit, the generations, the time that passes by and encourages us to make the future better than the past, to keep working on love and whatever else is important to us.
You’re just getting ready to hit the road with three shows in Colorado at the beginning of may. What are you most excited for on these upcoming shows?
Man, I love Colorado so much. The people, the mountains, the music community. I have such good times in Colorado and feel very welcomed there. I am excited to debut some new songs which I’ve recently written and am also looking forward to catching up with some good friends.
What can listeners expect from your live performances?
Expect the unexpected. But mostly, you’ll feel happiness in your heart, inquisitiveness in your brain, and hopefully a step or two in your dancing shoes.
Do you have any other big plans for the rest of 2016? Could we expect some more new music soon?
Yeah, absolutely. A new music video and record are in the works, as well as more tour dates. 2016 is shaping up to be a beautiful year for creativity and travels.
Thank you for taking the time to chat with us! Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Thank you for chatting with me. I really appreciate it. Would love to see you at a show.
