INTERVIEW: Pretty Vicious Talk About Navigating the Music Industry and Growing as Songwriters on Their Upcoming Debut Album
For young UK rock band Pretty Vicious, writing and recoding together is nothing new, but the band’s upcoming debut release finds them pushing themselves more than ever before. Although the group has been playing together in one way or another for years (and the majority of them have known each other their whole lives), their latest music - new single “Move” and latest release, “Are You Entertained?” - is Pretty Vicious at their strongest. Throughout the writing and recording process of their latest music, the band has not only perfected their sound, but also learned quite a bit about themselves in the process.
With new music out now and even more coming in 2019, the future is looking bright for Pretty Vicious! We recently caught up with the band to talk about their latest music, their growth over their years playing together and plans for the future. Read the full interview and watch the music video for “Move” now below.

Can you tell us a little bit about Pretty Vicious for anyone who might be hearing you for the first time?
We’re a band of mates in our late teens and early twenties from Merthyr Tydfil in Wales who have mostly known each other our whole lives (except Elliot, who’s two years younger than the rest of us). We like to make music that makes you feel something in one way or another as that’s what we believe the purpose of music is; to make you feel alive.
Over the summer, you guys released your new single, “Move.” Can you tell us about the track? What inspired it?
‘‘Move’’ is our attempt to write a song that you can’t listen to without wanting to move around. We just felt like we wanted to have some fun with one of our songs so we decided to make ‘’Move’’ that song. It’s a song about going to gigs, having fun with your mates and seeing what the night will bring.
“Move” is taken from your upcoming debut album! What goals did you guys have in mind when you first started working on it?
We just wanted to make an album that we were proud of. An album that we could look back on in however many years and still enjoy, not one that was only relevant at the time. It discusses many themes and subjects that are important to us and stuff that we care about, so it’s cool to be able to put out something like that. Like most first albums, it’s about the journey its taken us to get to this point, and believe me, it’s been an interesting ride even though we are still young.
How do you feel you have grown with the writing and recording of the album?
When we first starting recording music under the name Pretty Vicious we were all still in our mid-teens. When we recorded in the past we didn’t know exactly how to make our music sound the way we wanted it to, but over time we’ve learnt a lot about both the process and how to actually get our music to sound the way we’d always envisioned it in our heads.
Have you learned any important lessons while working on these songs?
Every song is a different process, from the rehearsal room, through pre-production, to recording it and playing it live. We worked in short bursts in the studio on this record, so you can retain your energy and enthusiasm. It can become a chore if you are locked away for weeks at a time. And of course working with the producer Dan Austin was great, he definitely helped bring some focus and another perspective to the songs.
Can fans expect to hear more new music from the album soon?
Yes! The album has been recorded so we’ll be releasing new music for the rest of this year and throughout next year before the album drops! The industry has changed because of streaming so you need to establish a profile by releasing more tracks before the album than ever before.
We have just released our second single, ‘‘Are You Entertained?’’.
Do you have any other big plans for the rest of the year? Any shows or upcoming tour dates?
We’re shooting the video for ‘’Are You Entertained?’’ this week & the treatment looks really exciting, it involves a fairground ride but that’s all I can say for the moment.
Then we’ve got a UK tour coming up in November before kicking everything off again early next year!
Thanks for taking the time to chat with us! Is there anything else you’d like to add?
We visited the states back in July, visiting Nashville & New York, and now plans are in place to return early next year & we can’t wait!
