Get to Know DIY Punks, The Nectars: "We Wanted to Make Music That Felt Uncaged"

New Jersey alt-rock band The Nectars are following their own path. Whether it's with their sound, their message, or simply their DIY ethics, this four-piece doesn't play by the rules, and that's what makes them so exciting. Fronted by charismatic and unpredictable vocalist, Jessica Kenny, The Nectars are charging headfirst into 2018, and who knows what they'll do next.

Right now, however, the band just released their gritty new single, "I Want It" and is gearing up to drop some more new music soon. Until then, if you're in the area, you can catch The Nectars playing at a bowling alley on Saint Patrick’s Day in Brooklyn on top of a few shows on the east coast. Get to know a little bit more about the band and listen to "I Want It" below!

Interview by Dom Vigil

Can you tell us a little bit about The Nectars for any new listeners?

We’re an indie rock band from New Jersey with a female front woman! And we like it loud!!

You guys quickly started gaining speed right after you formed a little over a year ago, but rather than signing with a label, you’re going the DIY route. Why was it important for you to stick to your guns and keep doing things your way?

Because the labels that approached us were closed minded, trend followers. Having been in both positive and negative label situations before, we felt it just wasn’t necessary this early on for us. We just want to play some shows for our fans and that doesn’t need to involve labels.

When you guys first formed, what goals did you have in mind for the music that you wanted to create?

We wanted to make music that felt uncaged. With so many indie bands dropping live drums for samples and bass guitar for synth bass we needed something grounded and real. And I’m not scoffing at bands that do that, but we’ve all spent time honing our craft and wanted to use it in an uninhibited way for our debut.

You ended 2017 with your single, “Heaven” and started the new year with your new track, “I Want It.” What would you want fans to take away from these songs?

That we won’t stop till everyone is a Nectars fan. We’ve got a new song and a music video to follow pretty much every month thru till summer and plenty more planned after that so get ready world we’re coming...

Can you tell us about “I Want It”? What inspired this song?

The song started with this sloppy major bar-chord riff I was scratching on acoustic at my girl’s house. I brought it to practice and Baron instantly did the pattern justice. A bit of vibe from Jess and Mikey and the song was finished. Jess wrote the lyrics about deep seeded human desires.

With “Heaven” and “I Want It” out now, can fans expect to hear some more new music from you soon?

Yes we have a very special song called “We Will Run” coming out next! More on that soon...

You’ve got a few shows across New York and New Jersey coming up over the next couple of months as well. What about these shows are you the most excited for?

We’re playing a bowling alley on Saint Patrick’s day in Brooklyn which I’m really excited about. We’re also planning to hit Asbury Park for a date as well. We’re all over the place! We even have a spot a mercury lounge coming up. Check our Facebook page for details.

What does the rest of 2018 have in store for The Nectars?

We’re heading to Europe this summer to release our debut album and do some light touring! That should be a scream!

Thank you for taking the time to chat with us! Is there anything else you’d like to add?

You guys are rad! :) thanks, stay sticky!
