Q&A with Modern Whale: "The Music Is Real, It’s Not Contrived"

Modern Whale doesn't play by the rules. The project doesn't necessarily conform to one particular genre - instead, they write and play what comes natural to them, and the same can be said about the release of their four singles last year and their newest song, "The Dirt." Rather than trying to stick to a schedule or plan, the band simply goes with the flow. The result is Modern Whale's incredibly unique and comfortable sound.

With the must-see music video for their new single, "The Dirt" out now, Modern Whale are currently working on new music and playing shows throughout their home state of New York. Get to know a little bit more about them below.

Interview by Shannon Shumaker

Can you tell us a little bit about Modern Whale for anyone who might be hearing you for the first time?

Robbie G: The band is my brain child as it initially started as something I was doing for myself, something that wasn’t intended to be shared. As I make my living as a record producer, I was enjoying just doing music for me w/o having to compromise. It was all about doing what I wanted to do! Drawing on my influences ranging from Phoenix to Led Zeppelin.

Modern Whale’s sound kind of rides the line between genres which allows you to explore a lot of different sounds. What would you like to accomplish sonically with this project?

The thing about Modern Whale is that I didn’t necessarily set out w/any genre in mind! I just did what felt good!

Last year you made your debut with a few singles and accompanying music videos. What goals did you have in mind for the project when you first started writing and releasing music together?

Upon initially writing the material I had no expectations! It is still sort of surprising to me that we have been able to reach so many people through Spotify, Vevo and our live performances. Now that we have built momentum we are looking forward to playing to more audiences and sharing more music!

If someone is hearing you for the first time, what would you like them to take away?

That the music is real, it’s not contrived. Lots of honest passion and soul.

You recently released your new single, “The Dirt.” Can you tell us a little bit about this song?

Firstly, we are so excited to have the “The Dirt” released on 6Tetra4 Records! We are thrilled to reach a larger audience b/c of 6Tetra4! “The Dirt” is about a relationship failing and the final days of being around each other.

The music video for “The Dirt” is insane! What inspired the story told in it?

Thanks! It reminds me of the Twilight Zone! The story was born w/the directors/actors Raviv Ullman, Martin Spanjers and John Beech. I love that the video is a New York city video!

With “The Dirt” out now, can fans expect any more new music in the coming months?

I’d like to release another 3 singles this year, maybe an EP!

What about upcoming shows?

We have predominately been playing around NY! Places such as Berlin, The Bowery Electric and The Mercury Lounge.

What would you like to accomplish with Modern Whale in 2018?

Continuing to create, share and entertain!

Thank you for taking the time to chat with us! Is there anything else you’d like to add?

Totally my pleasure! Thanks for asking the questions and featuring us! We post daily on instagram @modernwhalemusic
