Q&A with Monument Of A Memory: "We Finally Found a Perfect Balance of Heaviness and Melody"

New Jersey metalcore band, Monument Of A Memory aren't afraid of change. In fact, they face it head-on with their new EP, Ex-Mortis, which finds the band exploring new sounds more than ever before. The EP, which was released on the first of 2018, jumpstarted the new year for the band, and now, they're already working toward the next step. Last week, they kicked off a short run of tour dates alongside Icaria and just last month, the band released a music video for their powerful track, "Cold Eyes," which can be seen now below.

With an already busy year underway, Monument Of A Memory aren't slowing down anytime soon. Instead, the band is hard at work planning more tour dates for later this year and even writing more new music. Until then, get to know them a little bit better below!

The Prelude Press: Can you tell us a little bit about Monument Of A Memory for any readers who might be hearing you guys for the first time?

Dylan Newhouse: Monument Of A Memory is a metalcore band that takes influence from old school metalcore and combines it with a modern edge.

You’ve already had a pretty busy year so far with the release of your EP, a new music video and shows! What has been the highlight of your year so far?

Honestly the highlight of this year personally for me was probably playing our EP release show in NJ. Seeing how all the people reacted to our new material was honestly awesome.

Now that it has been out for a few months, what are some of your favorite things about your new EP, Ex-Mortis?

I think we finally found a perfect balance of heaviness and melody. We implemented way more choruses, which is something we all feel we want to do way more of on the next album. I think the riffs are beefy and drive the songs, the breakdowns are heavier than ever, the vocals are the best they've ever sounded, and overall I just feel like this band has shown a lot more signs of growth with this new EP.

How do you feel you’ve grown with the writing and recording of Ex-Mortis?

I think we all started realizing what we wanted for this band sound wise more. I think we went in deeper and really picked apart these songs and didn't settle for anything. We've all gotten a little older, our music tastes have expanded, and we have a lot more influences now. With all that being said, I think all of those things have played a huge role in how "Ex-Mortis" turned out.

You just released your new music video for “Cold Eyes” from the album, and I know there’s a bit of a story behind the track - can you tell us a little bit about it?

Our vocalist Tommy Gehringer found a man completely unconscious and not breathing on the streets of his town. He had to give the man CPR and he was able to be revived. Unfortunately, he died a couple weeks later after slipping into a coma. The song title comes from staring into the eyes of someone you believe is dead and how cold their eyes look when there's no life left in them. It's a very dark song but I think Tommy writing those lyrics helped him when he found out that the man didn't make it. You always wonder what more you could have done to help.

What did you want to accomplish with the video for “Cold Eyes”?

We all agreed we wanted a strict band shot only video. We wanted to find a way to make it more interesting and we think the whole theme of the cold and snow falling on us really helped make the video pop more and directly relates to the song title. Our videographer Eric Dicarlo always gives us his all and we love him.

With Ex-Mortis out now, you guys are also getting ready to hit the road for a run of tour dates throughout May! What are you most excited for at these upcoming shows?

We are very excited to see new places, but more importantly to see how people react to our music in different areas with different music scenes. Nervous, but excited haha. Also, just being able to hit the road with my best friends is gonna be a journey in itself.

Do you have any other big plans or goals for 2018?

A possible tour this fall, writing more new music, and just continuing to grind like we have been.
