2019 might be slowly coming to an end, but 19 year-old singer/songwriter, Maeta is just getting started.
Maeta has been releasing covers on Instagram and Soundcloud teasing fans with new music through weekly releases dubbed #MaetaMondays, and earlier this year, she began releasing her own original music, most recently, her new single, “Babygirl.” With the empowering track out now alongside a handful of new singles, Maeta is gearing up to end 2019 on a high note with the release her debut EP, Do Not Disturb on November 4th.
We caught up with Maeta to talk about her musical upbringing, “Babygirl” and new music – listen to the new song and read the full interview now below.
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself for anyone who might not be familiar?
I’m 19 years old, from Indianapolis, I live in LA, I’m a Pisces, I love to sing, and I am just trying to figure out my life lol.
What first inspired you to get involved in music?
Growing up there was constantly music playing in my house, there were instruments all over, I sang in my church, music was just a big part of my life. I would spend hours watching music videos and performances of my favorite artists and wanted to be doing that so bad. At one point I just decided that was the life I was going to live and I never questioned it. It ended up manifesting itself and now I am here!
You got your start releasing covers on your Instagram and SoundCloud – who are some artists that you’ve loved covering in the past or would love to cover in the future?
Anything Beyoncé, John Mayer, or HER. Those are my faves.
Earlier this year, you also began releasing your own original music, most recently your new single, “Babygirl.” For many people, this will be their first time hearing you – what would you like for them to take away from your music?
Babygirl makes me feel confident, sexy, and empowered. I get a boost of confidence when I listen to it and I want other people to feel the same way.
Can you tell us about “Babygirl”? What inspired the song?
Babygirl is a super special song to me. It’s been like an anthem for me this past year. It was written about a night when I first moved to LA. I was frustrated and overwhelmed with life and wanted to shut out everything and just be alone. It’s about taking control of what you give attention to, and being shamelessly selfish in a way.
Did you have any goals in mind when you first started working on “Babygirl”?
Babygirl wasn’t really a planned song. I was in with Livvi Franc, I came to the studio worn out and we talked for like an hour at the beginning of the session. We talked about life and all the shit going on. I ended up leaving because she likes to write alone and wasn’t expecting me to be there lol. Later that night I got sent Babygirl and I fell in love!
With “Babygirl” and a handful of other singles out now, can fans expect to hear more new music soon? Maybe an EP?
Yes! I have my first EP “Do Not Disturb” coming out on November 4th, I’ve been working on it since the beginning of the year and am so so happy it’s finally coming out. It’s special to me and basically summarizes my time since moving to LA. I can’t wait for people to hear.
Do you have any other big plans for the rest of 2019 or beginning of 2020?
I think I’m gonna go home for December, take a break and be with my family for a while. I need a break from LA for sure. For 2020, I have no clue! I definitely want to travel and go to some new places, I want to leave the country so bad. I’ll probably be back in LA working on new music or something. Who knows. I’m just gonna see what happens because planning never works for me lol.
Thank you for taking the time to chat with us! Is there anything you’d like to add?
Thank you!! Look out for my EP “Do Not Disturb” coming November 4th!!
