Interview with Kyd The Band: "My Goal Has Always Been to Make Music That Means Something"

Kyd The Band’s Devin Guisande has never been one to go with the flow, and his out of the box, creative songwriting has certainly paid off. While most artists flock to California to follow their dream, Guisande left California to hone in on his craft in Nashville, TN, and against all odds, he ended up landing cuts with Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Robin Schulz, gnash, NF, and ROZES to name a few. Now, Guisande is focusing on himself, and his current project, Kyd The Band is already catching the attention of fans across the country.

Since 2017, Kyd The Band has released a handful of exciting singles, most recently “Easy” featuring Elley Duhé. With more new music coming soon and a massive tour supporting NF slated for this fall, the rest of 2019 promises even more from the multi-instrumentalist, producer, and songwriter.

Can you tell us a little bit about Kyd The Band for anyone who might not be familiar?

Of course. My name is Devin and I'm Kyd the Band. Originally KTB started as a duo with my brother. He was a part of season 1.

Only a few years ago, you were working as a songwriter prior to releasing your own music as Kyd The Band. How does writing for another artist differ from writing for yourself? Do you feel more or less pressure when you’re working on your own music?

When I'm writing for another artist I really try to dive into what that person is all about, from what they've said in the past to what they want to say in the future. I feel a lot more pressure when I'm working on something for me, because I'm really hard on myself and have to be 100% sure every word/melody/musical element feels like me. The world has more than enough music so if I'm going to contribute to that it has to be honest and transparent.

Did you have any big goals in mind when you first started writing and releasing music as Kyd The Band?

Oh of course. From the very first song, my goal has always been to make music that means something and that is for the whole world. And to do that for as long as I can.

You’ve had a busy year so far with the release of a bunch of new music, most recently, “Easy” featuring Elley Duhé. What has been the highlight of your year so far?

Playing my first European show, hands down. Music is taking me around the world and that's wild to me.

What inspired “Easy”? Was there anything you really wanted to accomplish with the song?

Looking back at the things I've gone through choosing to make music my career. For me I want "Easy" to be a forever reminder, for others I hope they hear some of their own journey in it and feel inspired to keep going.

How do you feel you’ve grown as a musician and songwriter this year?

I'm better in both areas. Songwriting is like a muscle, the more you do it the stronger you get.

Can fans expect to hear some more new music soon?

Of course.

You’re also getting ready to hit the road with NF this fall! What are you most excited about on the upcoming tour dates?

Red Rocks, without a doubt. I've never been there, have only seen Youtube videos and Instagram posts of shows there. When there's somewhere I want to play I always tell myself I'm not going there until I'm playing a show there. This was one of those places.

If someone is seeing you live for the first time at one of these shows, what would you like them to take away from your live performance?

I want them to leave having a deeper connection to the music, because hopefully I've delivered face-to-face the honesty that the songs were written in. I also want people to feel connected to me, because I feel connected to them. Especially when I get to meet people after the show. And lastly I want them to leave filled and happy.

Thank you for taking the time to chat with us! Is there anything else you’d like to add?

Yeah, I want to thank you guys for being long-time supporters and followers. I really appreciate it.
