Crywolf rises from the ashes with his ethereal new single, “C E P H A L Ø T U S,” out everywhere today. “C E P H A L Ø T U S” is a synthesis of haunting vocals, abstract lyricism, atmospheric beats, and cinematic instrumentals that could be the soundtrack to a lucid dream.
Crywolf challenges the notion that an artist must fit into genre, ruthlessly coloring outside of the lines, carving his own musical path, leading to a unique and often indefinable sound. After getting an album’s worth of music and over $5,000 worth of gear stolen earlier this year in Chile, Crywolf returns with his last single of the year, and an entire new album to follow in 2019.
Raised in Hong Kong and spending much of his childhood traveling, Justin Taylor Phillips aka Crywolf is a man consumed with wanderlust. For his new single (and his forthcoming album), Crywolf headed to Patagonia, where he began to write in a small wooden cabin in the Huilo Huilo rainforest, a place rumored to be haunted with thousands of lost souls. Back in the US, Crywolf continued his musical journey, visiting Twin Peaks, the Blue Ridge mountains, Reno, and the forests of Vancouver. His passion for the unknown has been a driving force behind his artistic identity. Despite the troubles he ran into earlier this year while abroad, he persevered and continued to make some of his most beautiful work yet.
When Crywolf first started releasing music he went through periods of homelessness, living in a room the size of a closet, and subsisting on food stamps. He’s come a long way since those days, accumulating millions of streams, headlining the legendary Sherwood Forest stage at Electric Forest, and gaining support from tastemakers such as The FADER, Vice, Consequence of Sound, Alternative Press, Billboard, NYLON, and Complex.
The world of Crywolf is cinematic and surreal, a cacophony that sweeps you off your feet, taking you into the dark abyss one moment and into heavenly rapture the next. Melodies telling of internal wastelands lull the listener into a trance-like state. It’s a fully immersive experience.
