Y La Bamba recently released Mujeres via Tender Loving Empire and now, the band has released the music video for the album’s title track. The video originally premiered at Remezcla, along with an interview with singer-songwriter Luz Elena Mendoza.
“This video was a collaboration with Akela Jaffi, Grace Eucker, Che Che Luna, Mia O’Connor, Bonnie Bright, Laney Pak and Laney Paradise,” says Mendoza. “I also invited Noelle Sosaya as Artist Director to help piece the vision together.
My intention has been to continue to expand art through sound, light, and movement. This song is a daily mantra to continue to protect and fight, for all women, for myself. I love performance art, telling a story through images, visuals, and through music.
It’s a way that I love to convey what is hard to say in words.
This video is the connection between the presence of my divine in my body and my voice.”
Mujeres exists in the landscape of a national identity crisis, and Mendoza explores what it means to be a Mexican American woman by leading us through places we are afraid to go. The album ventures in to the discomfort of the stories we tell ourselves. Those of our past, our futures. We all have these stories somewhere inside of us, but with Y La Bamba, Mendoza forges new narratives from old stories of heritage and family, tracing history while forging modern Chicana feminism.
