Rising alt-pop artist Maggie Miles has shared her new single “Swim” today, and her powerful tune could not have come at a more crucial time. It builds to a climax before spiraling out of control, commanding the listener’s attention with Maggie at the center of it all, struggling to stay afloat and find strength to tread amongst the chaos of her own mind. Though the song’s theme is timeless, it resonates even deeper with the influx of emotions the world is currently experiencing.
“Swim” follows her latest single and first co-write in Nashville, “WHATDOISAY?,” a hard hitting pop-infused track that has been featured on a slew of playlists, everything from New Music Friday to, Indie Pop, Fresh Finds and more. Her previous single “Shiver” even garnered the attention of Billboard and American Songwriter. Evident of seemingly inherent talent, Maggie’s sound is all her own, standing apart from the rest in a time when bedroom pop is flooding the playlists and airwaves. With over 60K monthly listeners on Spotify, it’s clear that audiences are quickly taking note of her artistry.
“We all encounter this question at times,” Maggie shares her feelings on “Swim,” “You can’t tell if you’re barely above the waves; just doggy paddling, gasping every chance you can. Or if you’re absolutely still, floating on your back, letting the density of your state of mind hold you atop the water. Whatever it is, we’ve all been there. And acknowledging the darkness that can make itself home in the space behind your eyes is key to pushing on. This song helped me understand myself better, and I hope for your sake as the listener, it can do the same.”
The up-and-coming singer-songwriter has had her share of obstacles along the way and continues to swim. Earlier this month, Maggie was set to perform in her relatively new hometown of Nashville, when unfortunately a tornado touched down and tore the city apart. Always making the most of situations and forging ahead, Maggie continued with her show and made it a benefit, raising almost 2K in about 24 hours. In September, Maggie is set to make her first appearance at Bonnaroo in TN, in the coveted SheRoo stage, a special facet of the music and arts festival, one that celebrates the power of femininity and creates a safe space for individual identity. Furthermore, Yamaha is currently sponsoring Maggie as part of their emerging artist program, and they plan to launch some highly curated video content later this year.
Much like some of her peers, Maggie Rogers and Billie Eilish, she exudes authenticity which the modern generation is desperately craving. Originally from the Western Hills of Northern Virginia, she recently moved to Nashville to pursue music full time. Maggie grew up on the soulful vocals of vintage artists like Stevie Nicks and Ann Wilson, but has found 90s grunge to be a major source of inspiration as of late. She meshes all of her influences together with pounding, anthemic instrumentals to create a sound that’s all her own. In her music, she addresses the conflicts of life through sharp-hitting lyrics textured in alternative rhythms with pop sensibilities that paint a compelling picture of our imperfect existence. The contrast of her jangly sounds and perceptive lyrics are a result of her commitment to connectivity through the honest expression of the human condition. She shares, “I make music for the utter reason alone that I need to create something for myself that makes sense, when nothing else around me does.”
